It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the newly revamped Polytechnic Institute of Houston website. After receiving a lot of suggestions, feedback and constructive criticism about the problems faced by both students and faculty, the governing council decided to support my team completely regarding the website revamping project. Rather than give this work to an outside tech company, we decided to do it completely inhouse and the result as you can see is fantastic!
This is however still a work in progress and slowly we plan to integrate this new site completely with our legacy IT systems such as our Admissions Processing System, the Payroll system and the Learning Management System. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Departments of Computer Science and Electronics, for their excellent work in making this project a reality this year. Particularly the work of Patty Smith has been outstanding in this regard and she has gone beyond the call of duty, perhaps neglecting her own personal life in meeting the deadlines. I wish to take this opportunity to thank her and her family for their support.
This team work and family culture is what sets us apart from other Institutes of higher learning in the State of Texas and even in the entire country. As a student, you may find our pace of study demanding at times, but our faculty and teaching assistants, plus our volunteer mentors will help you in getting adapted to this pace in a short time. The institute believes in working hard to build a culture that rewards the speed of work, as well as the quality of work carried out. As a student, this will help you learn invaluable lessons, what with the new competitive folks out there in Asia. Remember that in this globalized world, like it or not, only those who excel will thrive.
For students enrolling in this quarter, I welcome you all wholeheartedly to the family and I am sure you will not be disappointed after you graduate from here. Our students are highly sought after by not only the large Fortune 500 corporations, but also by government institutes, research labs and academia.
Finally I would like to thank the entire family of faculty members, teaching assistants, volunteer mentors and the governing council members for their contribution in the excellent performance of the institute this year, not just financially but also in creating new Intellectual Property. Our team members have now more than 100 patents to their credit, co-owned by the institute. I wish all of you great success in your endeavors this year ahead too!
For those of you who may like to meet me, my doors are always open as usual.
John Smith, Jr.
